A Checklist for Maintaining Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning System

Whether it is the summer or cold season, it is a must that you give your Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system attention. It is not like every day you will check it but monthly maintenance can go a long way. If you take care of your HVAC system, it will take care of the family too!

HVAC system provides thermal comfort during the cold season and quality indoor air during the summer.  It is an important household device but many people seem to overlook it. You do not need to be an HVAC specialist to take an interest. Sometimes checking it once in a while and do basic maintenance can make a big difference.

HVAC maintenance

With that being said, it is time to make HVAC maintenance part of your routine schedule. Here is a checklist:

Replace the filters regularly

Air filters should be replaced at least once a month. Air filters are important because it can clean the air keeping dust, dirt and even pollen away. These filters are disposable because it is prone to clogging. You have to know that clogged air filters will reduce airflow. As a result, the cooling or heating system works harder and longer eating more energy.

Buying hvac supplies like air filters is not a daunting job to do. You only need to check the supplies store and they will give it to you without further ado.

Clear the compressors from obstruction and clean it after

Heat pumps and central air conditioning systems have this outdoor compressor. These compressors facilitate the exchange of hot and cold air. For compressors to do this properly, you need to make sure that there is no obstruction around it. If you need to, trim shrubs or leaves around it.

Cleaning the metal fins around the compressor should be done every season. You only need to spray water using a house to clean it. Refrain from using a pressure washer as it can damage the unit.

Check the thermostat settings

You can calibrate your thermostats only if you have a programmable one. If you have a programmable one, determine the right settings for the family. Do not turn it up and down always as it can lead to higher energy costs. To be safe, try to keep the settings steady.

Check the drainpipe

If you do not know the evaporator coil drainpipe, ask the technician about it. If you know where to find it, check it every now and then. See if there is any buildup of mold. This buildup can lead to blockage. People will only pay attention to drainpipe if they see water pouring in their ceiling. If you have a vacuum, you can start suctioning the buildup to relieve the blockage.

Call a service technician for a scheduled trip

Unless you have thorough knowledge about HVAC system, you should schedule service call during fall and in preparation for summer. HVAC system is somewhat complex so it needs professional maintenance every now and then. They will know how to effectively clean the system and will recommend the best course of action if there are damages needed to be fixed.
